From the Provider
“It can be difficult to talk about mental health in the Latinx community. My goal in serving all people—and especially Spanish-speaking people—is to create a therapeutic environment where every individual is comfortable opening up about the trauma and barriers that have affected them throughout life.”
About the Provider
Jessica’s path to a career in mental health began as a high school volunteer in her community hospital, where she met a bi-lingual, bi-cultural clinical social worker. A child of immigrants, Jessica had seen firsthand how language barriers affected her parents when seeking healthcare—and how having a translator present made talking about sensitive subjects even more difficult. Today, she recognizes the strength and courage it takes for people of Latin heritage to seek assistance for mental health. She hopes to help each person recognize the patterns and—in some cases—generational cycles of abuse that are contributing to their struggles. Jessica has done a lot of work with survivors of sexual and domestic violence who experience post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety and depression as a result. Her approach includes biopsychosocial assessment and cognitive behavioral therapy. She hopes her patients can use the skills they gain through therapy in their family systems to communicate with more confidence.
Outside of work, Jessica volunteers with Latinos Unidos Siempre, an organization focused on empowering youth to take leadership roles in their communities through educational, cultural, social and political development. She also enjoys drawing and doodling, spending time in nature, hiking and rollerblading.
